Spring Market Artisan Profile: Purl Necklace

Hi! My name is Amy Zicker and I am a fibre artist living in Lloydminster. While I have dabbled in felting and crochet; and definitely know my way around a self-made knitting pattern or two, my true passion is in dying and spinning up yarns.

I enjoy the dye pots on my stove, the intermingling of colours and fibres in my drum carder and the gentle ‘whir’ of my spinning wheel as I work. I like to refer to my yarns as ‘one-skein-wonders’ because only upon special request will I spin more than one skein of the same dye lot.

This means each skein I happily and lovingly spin is a unique creation that can then be taken by someone else and crafted into his or her own work of art. And, to me there is just something so special about hand making supplies for others to craft with – I enjoy being a part of different folk’s creative process (and seeing their finished projects of course). Really, nothing could be more rewarding.

My yarns and knits are available online on my facebook page ‘purl necklace’.

Another successful craft night!

Thanks again to the Mendel for letting us use their studio space for this month's craft night.

Got an idea of a craft that would make for an awesome craft night? Got a super skill you'd like to share? We'd love to hear from you. Drop us a line at caroleepp@yahoo.ca

We're also always on the lookout for spaces to host craft nights so if you or anyone you know has a space that's craft friendly (some electrical outlets, tables, chairs) we'd be interested in talking with you!

Spring Market Artisan Profile: Jason Cockrum of Missing Spoon Jewelry

In college a friend of mine twisted the handle off of a spoon. I thought he had wrecked it until I discovered another use for it; I bent a ring by hand. Over the last 12 years I have refined the process. I have expanded my repertoire to include bracelets, earrings, coat hooks, napkin holders, business card holders, et cetera, all created from cutlery (mainly spoons).

I currently live in Martensville, Sk. with my wife - Lindsay, 1 year old son – Hayden, & our dog Charlie.

Spring Market Artisan Profile: Prairie Sown

Prairie Sown Christy Miller (aka Prairie Sown) has always loved making – and giving- homemade presents. In addition to sewing, she dabbles in printmaking and screen-printing her own fabrics. You can check out what she’s been up to at http://prairiesown.blogspot.ca/.

Accompanying Christy is fellow-crafter Vicki Corbin. Vicki comes from a long line of sewing enthusiasts. Using her Grandmother’s vintage sewing machine, she has created numerous items for family and friends. Her most recent projects include coffee cuffs, Caloo fabric dolls and fabric birds.

This is Vicki and Christy’s first foray into selling their wares and they are excited to be a part of the Flock & Gather Springtime Handmade Market.

Our wheels are spinning....

Our pinwheels that is!

The flock & gather crew recently got together to work on the details and decorations for our upcoming Spring Market. St. Joe's hall has been booked once more and the selected artisans are busy making goods for you to feast your eyes upon and fill your home with. So mark your calendars for April 13th and 14th and come out to support local independent craft artists at the f&g Spring Market.

In the meantime keep checking back on the blog as we'll be posting artisan profiles leading up to the sale.

Our next craft night - March 20th

flock and gather in partnership with the Mendel Art Gallery are hosting another craft night. You don't want to miss out on this fun, productive, social and crafty event. So mark you calendars:

March 20th
6pm to 8:30pm in the studio @ the Mendel Art Gallery

*** Due to space limits at the Mendel we are limited to 20 participants so please RSVP early and please let us know if you have to cancel for any reason so we can let others attend. Thanks!***

If you've never attended a flock and gather craft night before then you're in for a great night! Everyone is welcome. Feel free to bring a project of your own to work on if you're not interested in the craft we put together. It's more important that you show up and hang out than what you make in the end.

What we'll be making - Cute and funky decorative animal jars.
Check out the link here: http://www.housetohome.co.uk/room-idea/picture/playful-playroom-storage-ideas/9

We figure with the weather warming up and spring cleaning around the corner some fun organizing ideas are in order! These would be great around the studio for sorting, or fill them with candies as a fun gift.

What you'll need to bring with you:
* Empty jars with lids. These can be empty food containers of any size or shape so long as you have the matching lid.
* Some animals or other trinkets (use your imagination) to add to the top.

What we'll be supplying:
The glue and paints you need, some coffee and snacks and our charming personalities : )

You can RSVP on our facebook event page or by emailing caroleepp@yahoo.ca
