Handmade House seeking new Artisans

The working members who run Handmade House on Broadway are always looking for new Saskatchewan-based artisans to consign work in the shop. We always set aside time at our monthly meetings to examine any small, representative samples of work either sent to us or dropped off at the shop. There'd be no question about the quality of work by those who have already been juried into the Saskatchewan Craft Council, but we have to decide whether it would fit with what we already sell, and whether we have space in our small shop to adequately display it. After the meeting, someone from the shop would contact the artisan by phone to discuss our decision.

We are open every day except Sundays and holidays from 10:00am to 5:30pm. Any working member who happens to be in the shop would be happy to talk to interested artisans in person at 710 Broadway Ave., Saskatoon, or by phone at 306.655.5542, or they could contact us by email. Samples of work can be left at the shop during business hours.

Very last minute, but of interest none the less...

Art Event - Expression of Interest Request

The Friends of the Forestry Farm House is a non-profit organization committed to providing opportunities for city residents and visitors to discover the rich history of the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo, while also encouraging them to enjoy the peace and tranquility the house and grounds offer. The restored red brick Superintendent’s Residence stands as a testament to the past, offering for visitors, now and in the future, a glimpse of an important part of the heritage of Saskatoon and Saskatchewan.

The Friends of the Forestry Farm House is hosting their second Annual Spring Show and Sale event that would draw in citizens as well as providing a small fund raising opportunity for our non-profit.

As hosts, the Friends of the Forestry Farm House would

1. oversee the invitation to artists

2. publicize the event

3. book the Superintendent’s Residence

4. create a floor plan for artists.

5. provide food services

The artist space would be provided free although we would encourage a minimum $25 donation towards the Friends of the Forestry Farm House at the completion of the event. We have a very dedicated communications volunteer who would publish the event in a number of different mediums.

The Superintendent’s Residence is a two story house although the event would be limited to the main floor. Each artist would have approximately an 8’ x 8’ space in one of the 4 main rooms. The food services and our group display would be in the porch and this would allow for space for 12 to 14 artists. Each artist would be responsible for the display of their art endeavors - such display would be required to be free standing. Tables and electrical plug ins are available as are chairs. Extra lighting is the responsibility of the artist.

We have chosen Sunday May 27th from 1:00 to 4:30 as the date. This coincides with our published walking tour and open house. There are minimal other published events on that date in Saskatoon at this point and it is before the usual “lake” season. The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo on a nice weekend in May draws in a significant number of patrons.

You have received this email as an invitation to submit your expression of interest along with images or a website showing your work. Due to space constraints and to ensure a well balanced mix of styles that will fit well within the house and compliment fellow artists, the committee will review and select from interested respondents. We recognize that it is only 3 months to the event and that it will require dedication for the artist to be ready for the show and sale. Please reply by March 25th to this email with the above information and any further questions that you might have regarding our 2nd annual Spring Art Event.. We require a completed application form to be submitted as a letter of intent to ensure that we have the space adequately booked.

Sincerely,

Friends of the Forestry Farm House

Call for performative art work for Mendel Art Gallery

LUGO is seeking submissions for the presentation of a performative artwork to take place during this year’s event. The selected artist will present a work that will unfold during the evening throughout the Gallery spaces. The work will be conceived in the spirit of this year’s event –hand-made, heart-warming, evocative, collaborative and engaging.

Artists working in all disciplines will be considered. Performance art, dance, theatre, literature, sculpture, audio may be particularly well suited for this venue. For example, artists may engage with party participants to collect source material for a collaborative poem, an audio art piece, or a sculptural installation. The presentation could be a finished work – a dance or performance – or provide an opportunity to workshop a new piece. The artist must demonstrate the ability to execute the proposed project. A small honorarium will be paid.

To apply, email a brief description of the proposed activity (one or two paragraphs), a list of any technical support you may need, documentation of your work, and a résumé. Feel free to include additional support material including photographs, a script, video or links to the web. The deadline for submissions is December 15. We will accept online submissions only, merci.

WINTERGREEN – Emerging Artist and Market Experience Booth

CALL FOR EMERGING CRAFT MARKETERS to participate at the Saskatchewan Craft Council’s WINTERGREEN Fine Craft Market, this November 18-20 at the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina.

WINTERGREEN is an annual three day craft show and sale at the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina, featuring Juried Professional members of the Saskatchewan Craft Council. SCC markets are organized this way to foster an environment where excellence in craft is nurtured, recognized and valued. However, the SCC is also committed to aiding Saskatchewan craft artists to flourish creatively and economically. The SCC values education, mentorship and a supportive community of craft people.

In order to achieve these ends, the SCC has on occasion invited emerging craft artists into our sales in order to experience the market environment first hand and expand their contacts with the Saskatchewan craft community.

A 10x12’ booth space has been reserved at this year’s Wintergreen fine craft market especially for emerging craft artists. The SCC represents members in a variety of mediums including:

- Clay, Metal, Glass, Fibre and Wood

- Jewellery, Candles & Soap, Paper

- Visual Art including Painting, Printmaking and Photography

- Mixed Media

The booth would be able to accommodate a limited amount of work from up to 6 artists (depending on the size of the work). In order to qualify to take part in this initiative you must:

- Be or become an SCC member (Professional, Affiliated, Craftsperson or Student category - contact for info to join)

- Have fewer than 3 years craft market experience

- Be committed to pursuing a career in craft

There will be a $150 fee for taking part in the Emerging artist Market experience booth. In addition, because this initiative is also meant to give you hands on experience in exhibiting at markets, you must also commit to set up and take down of the booth, and working at the booth for the weekend. After the market, you will need to fill out a questionnaire to give us feedback about your experience at WINTERGREEN.
