Winter Wonders Artisan Profile - Magic Skirt

Everyone loves handmade clothes! So exciting to have Magic Skirt joining us for the market.

Meg Hadland learned how to sew from her mom and her grandma, when she was just knee-high to a grasshopper. Years later, she inherited her grandma's antique sewing machine, and found she enjoyed making clothes for herself and her friends. She eventually joined the St. James Community Farmer's Market, and after her success at the 2011 Saskatoon Fringe Festival, she decided to move to Montreal to pursue her career as a clothing designer, making her own clothes under the name Magic Skirt Clothing.

What is a Magic Skirt you ask? Well, "When I was four years old I had a skirt. It was stretchy and black with neon green and pink stars on it. It was totally rad. When I wore it I could fly, I could control people, I could be invisible, I could bend the entire universe to my will. I was magic. It was magic. It was my Magic Skirt."

Magic Skirt Clothing is available at Alchemy Clothing & Salon in Saskatoon, and Sew Dandee in Winnipeg.

Winter Wonders Artisan Profile - Quirks & Twists Jewelry

Great news - the lovely and talented Kristina Johnson of Quirks & Twists Jewelry will be back at our Winter Market!

She is a local independent artist who creates unique handcrafted jewelry using reclaimed vintage pieces, metals, gemstones, glass and whatever else comes her way.

In her words:
I have always been drawn to handmade art; I’ve been crafting and making things since childhood – one of my earliest memories is painting with my grandma. I am self-taught and have been designing and making jewelry since 2003. I started with the basics and quickly discovered my love for beads, beads and more beads! My styles have changed over the years and I am now primarily working with vintage pieces which I combine with new materials resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces.

Call for performative art work for Mendel Art Gallery

LUGO is seeking submissions for the presentation of a performative artwork to take place during this year’s event. The selected artist will present a work that will unfold during the evening throughout the Gallery spaces. The work will be conceived in the spirit of this year’s event –hand-made, heart-warming, evocative, collaborative and engaging.

Artists working in all disciplines will be considered. Performance art, dance, theatre, literature, sculpture, audio may be particularly well suited for this venue. For example, artists may engage with party participants to collect source material for a collaborative poem, an audio art piece, or a sculptural installation. The presentation could be a finished work – a dance or performance – or provide an opportunity to workshop a new piece. The artist must demonstrate the ability to execute the proposed project. A small honorarium will be paid.

To apply, email a brief description of the proposed activity (one or two paragraphs), a list of any technical support you may need, documentation of your work, and a résumé. Feel free to include additional support material including photographs, a script, video or links to the web. The deadline for submissions is December 15. We will accept online submissions only, merci.

To submit a proposal or for more information, contact Troy Gronsdahl: tgronsdahl@mendel.ca

Winter Wonders Artisan Profile - Crystal Klassen

Check out this new fresh work by Saskatoon's own Crystal Klassen! Flock & gather are so thrilled she'll be participating in the Winter Wonders Handmade Market.

As an artist with a background in photography and painting, she has a natural affinity for graphic design. She recently began to meld all three of these mediums into one multimedia series titled Small Profiles. Each piece in this series contains a sense of innocence and playfulness that hearkens back to school days, when the margins of our books were filled with doodles. The artwork is mounted to a wooden box, which can easily be hung on a wall or stand on its own.
