Winter Wonders Artisan Profile: Spineless

SPINELESS
*handmade sketchbooks, journals, photo albums, and other miscellany*

Karen earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan where she focused on painting, drawing and photography.  It was in one of her photography classes where Karen first learned about the process of hand-binding books, and she has been exploring new styles and combinations ever since.  She lives and works in Saskatoon, where by day she is a picture framer and by night she enjoys cutting, gluing and sewing things together.

Combining mostly found and second-hand materials with various other cultural ephemerae, Karen makes things you can use!

Winter Wonders Artisan Profile: K V D Creations

My name is Kristin van den Driesen.  I have always been into one craft or another since I was young.  Whether it was making necklaces, painting, crochetting or knitting (which is two of my favorite things to do).  My grandmother and her craftiness of quilting, sewing, crochetting and knitting me always had me asking questions about what she was doing and how.  Her talent has always inspired me.  Over the years my grandmother has helped me with the quality of my crafting.  Soon, my friends would see my knitted items that I was wearing and say, "oh, I love that, can you make me one".  I then became very busy making things for my friends, and then following, their friends would ask for one and that became my small, casual, word of mouth business.  It then continued and became that friends of friends would be requesting a knitted cowl, or crochetted baby toque and I then gave my business a name, K VD Creations and became active on facebook.

I love what I do, I love creating.  I have never been the cookie cutter type and I design all my own items, I have never used a pattern, I make up my own.  I have a passion for showing your individuality through what you wear and I am so honored when someone requests I make them one of my quarky chunky chains and then later I see them wearing it down Broadway in Saskatoon and it makes me smile.
I often get bugged for what I do but I say, GO AHEAD, call me an old lady, I think crochetting is cool!!!

flock & gather craft night november 8th

So in the spirit of the season we thought it fitting to have a craft night with the theme of holiday prep. Bring your creative mind, a friend or two, and most importantly yourself to our next craft night on November 8th at 6pm at the Mendel in their studio space just off the main gallery on the main floor.

No experience necessary, just a desire to have fun.
Materials will be provided, but please feel free to also raid your own craft closet for things such as stamps, colored paper, paints, glitter, markers, etc to bring with you.

What will we be making?
How about some beautiful paper garlands for your tree or house?

or learn how to make your own Washi tape

Photography coffee night round up!

We love our Erin (how could we not!) and so we were quite thrilled to have her host our September coffee night and give us all some insight into her creative photography process. She's got quite the eye and knowledge when it comes to how to best photography your product for online sales (etsy, etc.) or just beautiful, fun and unique product shots.

Thanks so much Erin!

Got any ideas for our next coffee night? Would you like to be a presenter?
f&g are always looking for members of the community to share their knowledge and experience on anything craft related. These are super low key, relaxed events. Nothing to stress about. But a great experience for everyone. Please drop us a line is you think you could help us out with a coffee night!
