Karen
earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan where she
focused on painting, drawing and photography. It was in one of her
photography classes where Karen first learned about the
process of hand-binding books, and she has been exploring new styles and
combinations ever since. She lives and works in Saskatoon, where by
day she is a picture framer and by night she enjoys cutting, gluing and sewing
things together.
Combining mostly found and
second-hand materials with various other cultural ephemerae, Karen
makes things you can use!

Winter Wonders Artisan Profile: K V D Creations
My name is Kristin van den Driesen. I have always been
into one craft or another since I was young. Whether it was making
necklaces, painting, crochetting or knitting (which is two of my favorite
things to do). My grandmother and her craftiness of quilting, sewing,
crochetting and knitting me always had me asking questions about what she was
doing and how. Her talent has always inspired me. Over the years my
grandmother has helped me with the quality of my crafting. Soon, my friends would see my knitted items that I was
wearing and say, "oh, I love that, can you make me one". I then became
very busy making things for my friends, and then following, their friends would ask for one and that became my small,
casual, word of mouth business. It then continued and became that friends
of friends would be requesting a knitted cowl, or crochetted baby toque and I
then gave my business a name, K VD Creations and became active on facebook.
I love what I do, I
love creating. I have never been the cookie cutter type and I design all
my own items, I have never used a pattern, I make up my own. I have a
passion for showing your individuality through what you wear and I am so honored when someone
requests I make them one of my quarky chunky chains and then later I see them
wearing it down Broadway in Saskatoon and it makes me smile.
I often get bugged
for what I do but I say, GO AHEAD, call me an old lady, I think crochetting is
cool!!!

Oh happy day indeed!
So contrary to the very serious faces you see here, the f&g crew have been having a great time lately getting the ball rolling for our upcoming Winter Wonders Handmade Market. I know it's still warm out and the leaves haven't fallen yet, but we can't help but think of the holidays and of all the wonderful local indie craft we're going to be bringing you at this year's market.
We've been putting our heads together to work on decorations, participant lists, and a few little surprises as well. Needless to say this will be our best market yet! Over the next few weeks stay tuned for some other fun events leading up to the sale, like a long overdue craft night, a collaboration with the Saskatchewan Craft Council and another coffee night.
Oh yah and soon the blog will be filled to the brim with artisan profiles not to be missed to wet your appetite for the market and so that you can start on your wishlist early : ) Until then here's a sneak peek into the lovely Shauna Buck's studio. She's got an amazing new press which was a sight to be seen and we even got a wee little peek at this year's Winter Wonders poster! It's a gorgeously adorable illustration of.....no wait, you'll just have to wait and see for yourself!
Shauna has not only a garage studio, but also an amazingly organized office studio in her house. It was filled to the brim with inspiration.
Shauna's going to have some lovely handpainted pieces like the ones below at the sale, but you know these won't last long so make sure to grab them while you can.
More to come so stay tuned....

Spring Market Artisan Profile: Walden Sweet Design

We love to make pretty things. We love to screen print. What could be better than that.
"I took a shower washing every body part with actual soap; including all my major crevices; including in between my toes and in my belly button, which I never did before but sort of enjoyed. I washed my hair with adult formula shampoo and used cream rinse for that just washed shine. I can't seem to find my toothbrush, so I'll pick one up when I go out today. Other than that, I'm in good shape."
-quote from the film Home Alone
